This rendering is inspired by the holiday season itself. Getting together with friends and family is a common way to celebrate, and I wanted to try and capture that feeling in a visualization.

The Making of "Holiday Visit"

Modeling

After developing the concept for this visualization, I gathered a good deal of reference material and began modeling the objects in 3D. Below are some images of the objects I built for the scene.

Material Building

I generally build my own materials using references and textures from different sources.

Lighting and Rendering

I wanted to light the scene in a way that would give the impression of guest activity outside the brighly lit kitchen. I did this by using warm, incandescant lighting in an adjacent room to contrast with the cooler and brighter lighting of the kitchen. This warm light is strking unseen 3D models of people, casting human shadows into the visible area.
